HOME VISITOR - HEALTHY FAMILIES

The Children's Cottage Society of Calgary provides crisis nursery, respite, and family support programs for vulnerable children. To achieve our vision of “Safe Children in Healthy Families” we are looking for experienced and professional individuals to support the Society’s In- home visitation needs. This position will serve clients in Airdrie and surrounding communities.

This is a Temporary 8 month position (With chance of extension), based on a 40 hour work week, allowing for some flexibility, as there are occasional evening visits.

Responsibilities:

  1. Establishes and maintains a relationship with complex families by providing regular contact through home visits.
  2. Uses observation skills to identify family concerns and implement effective interventions.
  3. Utilizes advanced strength-based, solution focused strategies in working with families.
  4. Acts as a liaison between families and other community agencies and encourages family self-reliance.
  5. Establishes and implements a family support plan with goals, objectives, and activities identified with parents.
  6. Utilizes developmental assessment tools for children and makes recommendations to parents.
  7. Records home visit observations and activities in a complete, concise, and timely manner as required.
  8. Assists parents with applications as required.
  9. Recording of Documentation and Outcomes in Efforts to Outcomes Database (ETO).

Qualifications:

  1. Diploma or Degree in human service field
  2. Minimum of one year of experience working with children and their families Demonstrates proficiency as a Home Visitor and or demonstrates maturity and experience in supporting parents in raising infants/young children (Newborn to 3 months of age).
  3. Current first aid/ CPR/Suicide Intervention, Aboriginal Awareness training and diversity competence.
  4. Knowledge of family dynamics, child development, family problems and stresses of parenting, substance abuse, and domestic violence. Applies knowledge of parent-child interactions, child development and the dynamics of child abuse and neglect.
  5. Must have valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle and safe driving record.
  6. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Second languages are an asset.
  7. Proficient use of computers including ability to document using a data base.
  8. Excellent knowledge base and skills in: Early Childhood Development, family and community resources as well as skill in crisis intervention, teaching, listening and basic problem solving.
  9. Ability to recognize the need for professional intervention, to be non-judgmental, to be motivated to learn from direct experience, as well as, from training and supervision, and to work independently.
  10. Willing to work flexible hours to meet families needs.
